I think the CV joint on my driver's side is going bad (looks a little wet), how long can i Drive on it?

I looked at my CV joints and the one on the driver's side has some kind of oil on it. How long can I drive with it being like that until itll need to be replaced? And how much will it cost me when i do have to have it done? Would i just need it replaced on that one side? I dont have a lot of money.

Also, i have some oil leaking from around the oil pan. Its not a lot just a few drips here and there. What could be the cause of that? Should i take it back to the last place that changed my oil and have them fix it? The oil was changed about a week and a half ago. Can i keep driving it with this leak until my next oil change since the leak is so small?

The car is a 2000 Civic Si.I think the CV joint on my driver%26039;s side is going bad (looks a little wet), how long can i Drive on it?
1 if the CV joint isnt clicking/clacking it will/could last for years and 20/40K miles cost is 200 per side.. if it has 125,000 mi or more do both sides while its at shop

Oli pan...a simple oil change will not cause lots of leak//unless guy poured 1/2 qt down the side or overfilled [did u chek level] wip it clean and see what it really is doing before asking a mechanic..[they aim to please and will be happy to put a new 500 dollar oil pan gasget %26quot;just to be safe%26quot; could b valve cover gasget..I think the CV joint on my driver%26039;s side is going bad (looks a little wet), how long can i Drive on it?
If the CV joint is going bad, it will start to make noise when you turn. You can drive it until it breaks or until you can't stand the noise.

Any one know why my steering feels loose and jerks when i run over bumps, & the steering wheel isnt centered?

I just changed the driver's side CV joint. I am not sure how this effected the steering Colum since the CV joint connects to the transmission. its and older car, 1987 Buick.Any one know why my steering feels loose and jerks when i run over bumps, %26amp; the steering wheel isnt centered?
If you unmounted the McPherson strut when changing the axle which I believe you would have to do when swapping the axles then the remounting of the strut may not be where it was before starting. The strut holds the tire upright and controls how the top of the tire leans in or out. When you reattached the strut it did not get put back where it had been and now the tie-rod attached to it is now out of position. I doubt anything is worn out this soon after replacing the axle. Take the car in for a front end alignment and the shop should be able to reposition it for you.Any one know why my steering feels loose and jerks when i run over bumps, %26amp; the steering wheel isnt centered?
alignment sounds like you didnt do something rightAny one know why my steering feels loose and jerks when i run over bumps, %26amp; the steering wheel isnt centered?
You have a suspension problem. Your CV shaft shouldn't affect the wheel alinement unless for some reason your tie rod ends have been replaced or adjusted.

Check ball joints, tie rodsAny one know why my steering feels loose and jerks when i run over bumps, %26amp; the steering wheel isnt centered?
Worn ball joints (if equipped), worn tie rod ends, worn shocks. Or possibly you didn't get everything tightened properly after working on it. The steering wheel being not centered indicates bad wheel alignment which can be contributed to the aforementioned parts being worn out.Any one know why my steering feels loose and jerks when i run over bumps, %26amp; the steering wheel isnt centered?
im unfamiliar with the design of your steering system, but take into account all the things mentioned above as well as steering rack bushings.Any one know why my steering feels loose and jerks when i run over bumps, %26amp; the steering wheel isnt centered?
i would say ball joints, get them replaced but first make sure which ones, even when they look good you have to test them, get the wheels out one by one and shake the ball joints, they shouldn't have any loose movement.

My car is making a clicking/popping sound, what is wrong with it?

It's on the left side and it makes the sound mainly when I take turns, especially when I turn the wheel all the way. We have checked both calipers and both cv joints. We actually changed the one on the drivers side before I found out how to check to see if they were bad. It is a '97 Dodge Avenger, and I haven't had it for that long. Breaks are perfect and so are the calipers. As far as I can tell the cv joints are fine too. I was told that if I try and move the cv joint and it moves then it's bad, but if it doesn't then it is fine. and it doesn't move at all.My car is making a clicking/popping sound, what is wrong with it?
its a dodge...thats whats wrong...lol i would have said check the sv joint but you said u did so i dont knowMy car is making a clicking/popping sound, what is wrong with it?

Cv joint makes clicking noise. how long can i run? Is it safe?

Hi, one of my cv joints is making the clicking noise (it's worn off due to broken boot) and i don't want to bother changing them right now. I'm getting holidays in another month.

I already drove about 2000km's like this.

Is it safe?

What's the worst?Cv joint makes clicking noise. how long can i run? Is it safe?
It could go at any minute.

Why push off the inevitable??

It won't cost any less or take any less time if you wait.Cv joint makes clicking noise. how long can i run? Is it safe?
I have seen them run that way for months. The best thing to do is change it obviously, but if you cant afford to, then just run it carefully. The worst thing that would happen is you stop moving. When that axle gives you will be stuck. Also, check your motor mounts before installing the new one, they are often the cause for a bad CV joint.

Best of Luck! You will need it.Cv joint makes clicking noise. how long can i run? Is it safe?
I have heard CV joints clicking for months, My opinion, you can make another month or so if you avoid sharp turns.. That's where the problem is, the CV works like a universal joint, when you turn hard, you put more strain on the joint..PS they ain't cheap....Nuf saidCv joint makes clicking noise. how long can i run? Is it safe?
Ever had a car with a driveshaft? Universal joints and CV's are the same thing. With the broken boot, the lubricating grease is now gone, and dirt and water is grinding the parts away. What is the worst? You will be broken down with no place to go cause it won't move. Safe? In what way. The parts seize, lockup and snap. And if you are doing highway speeds the CV rotates the same speed as the wheel. You could lose more than the CV - the other CV and the axle shaft and general control of the vehicle as it locks up the wheel.

Now you know.Cv joint makes clicking noise. how long can i run? Is it safe?
you are on borrowed time. to think it's gonna last another month, after you've been driving on it for that long already, is foolishly hopeful on your part. 1 of 2 things WILL happen. i repeat; WILL HAPPEN. the joint is gonna lock up, and jam, while you are turning, and, depending on how fast you are going at the time, the car will suddenly stop. the wheel will not turn(as in the steering wheel), and/or will not rotate(as in , letting the car roll) ,or, the joint will break up into pices, and the axle will turn inside of the joint housing, and the car will roll freely; that is, no power will reach the wheel/tire from the axle. then, the car will roll to a stop. it will not drive the car with only 1 axle turning.either way, you are looking at a tow bill, and the repairs on top of that. why chance it?Cv joint makes clicking noise. how long can i run? Is it safe?
Obviously, it should be changed. Having said that, I have never heard of one actually breaking like a universal joint. Try packing a little more grease into it, and it should get you through until your holidays. Just go easy on the gas pedal, especially on corners. I've had this before on old Minis - sometimes for over 5,000 kms - with no major breakdown, and no additional damage.Cv joint makes clicking noise. how long can i run? Is it safe?
well,it can get to the point to where it will lock up with you and maybe do something to your tranny.

How should I spend my tax check- 3 options?

I need to finish my dental work I need another root canal and I need a permanant cap put on the side I already had done, the other side I didn't even start yet it's a missing tooth and it's in the back so it's not really visable it just bothers me because I know I'm missing a tooth. It's around $1000 and would take my whole tax check.

My car is literally falling apart needs a tune up oil change shocks and a new cv joint and axel. Again would take my whole tax check

I owe capital one 1000. Same thing whole tax check

Which one is the most importanat? How should I spend my tax check- 3 options?
Well your teeth will have to wait

I was going to choose your car till I seen you owe

Capital One ,

They charge late fees which accrue each month ( or maybe wks I would check it out) this can add up real fast and be very stressful not to mention owing a bank goes on your **Credit

Report** and can of course ruin your credit So forget about buying a new car later.

Trust me pay Capital One

Get someone to drive you to work

and since your teeth arent bothering you to much they can wait

Besides if you dont pay your bills you wont be doing much smiling anyway!!!How should I spend my tax check- 3 options?
I would pay capital one, that way you have good credit and you can charge the other 2 things and pay on them, rather than having to pay all at once. How should I spend my tax check- 3 options?
I say pay Capital One. Then you'll have one less monthly payment, thus giving you more money each month to put aside for your car and your teeth. And in the long run, if you wait to pay Capital One, you'll be wasting money because of interest rates. How should I spend my tax check- 3 options?
get your tooth fixedHow should I spend my tax check- 3 options?
Capital One - your credit is very important, so keep it squeeky clean by getting rid of this debt! If you free up the card, then you could always use it again if there's an emergency with your car.

As far as your dental work - find a dentist that takes monthly payments and get it done!

Best wishes! How should I spend my tax check- 3 options?
I would fix your car. The other things can wait, but you won't be able to do ANYTHING without your vehicle. How should I spend my tax check- 3 options?
I would say, pay off CapitalOne and then go here for a loan from them for your dental needs

http://www.capitalonehealthcarefinance.com/dental/

See which one would offer you a better interest rate and take it from there. How should I spend my tax check- 3 options?
the credit card debt. considering you are probably pay close to the min. payment and the interest is probably around 19%. I would get rid of that first. The car, maybe start to look at something a little better and not waste your time on a piece of junk. How should I spend my tax check- 3 options?
Tooth. You can get your teeth to the point that they can't be fixed. Everything else can be replaced. How should I spend my tax check- 3 options?
pay off the credit card. Sell the car and buy a newer one. As for the dental work .. save up then have the work done. How should I spend my tax check- 3 options?
Fix the car. You can pay minimums to Capital One and the dental work is not an emergency. Plus with the car you can get a job to pay for the other things. Without the car, how can you work? How should I spend my tax check- 3 options?
Tough one! I would say stay with the crdt card bill.

I would say fix your car and ask if you can make payments on the dental work? Or vise versa some car shops finance now so if they do then why not.How should I spend my tax check- 3 options?
Your car is the most important one. With no car you cant get to work to pay for the other things.

What causes the CV joint boot to tear?

I have to change the whole drive shaft of the fron passenger site because of the boot. What is the cause? How can it be prevented? What causes the CV joint boot to tear?
The CV joint will inevitably tear. It's made out of rubber. When rubber gets wet - then dries, it will begin to degrade. Plus turning left/right (even though the boot is formed into an %26quot;accordian%26quot;) will slowly work at breaking down the rubber boot. Eventually - like all things made from rubber, it will become brittle and crack.

It's unfortunate that when they go you typically need to replace the whole front axel-shaft. But - it happens. I've heard that if your replace CV joints before they crack - they can replace the boot on-axel. However I've never had it done myself.

I guess CV joint damage prevention would consist of: Not driving on wet/salty roads, putting a rubber-stabilizer on the outside of the boot (although I think they already do this), re-apply said stabilizer regularly, make the boot of a more durable material, only drive in straight lines, drive in warm weather (where rubber is most maliable). What causes the CV joint boot to tear?
possibly hit something in the road or someone has damaged it while working under the car. BUT BESIDES THAT THEY DO GET OLDWhat causes the CV joint boot to tear?
heat dirt old age rubbing something

dont have to replace whole axle but just not knowing how long its been bad and how much dirt as got on joints is a good thing to do

but can just buy a cover boot and replace that sometimes all need to do is remove the tire

not a hard job to do at home with most cars just a few nuts or bolts axle pop out with a few good tugs cant really stop it just have to keep a eye on repairs they all go badWhat causes the CV joint boot to tear?
just wear and it dries out. you might try what i do. i spray silicone spray on my boots. it repels water and keeps them soft so they don,t dry out. i did that for years.

HOw much would it cost to fix CV joint and struts?

HI I have a 91 Cavalier Z24 and need to get a new CV joint on right side and new struts....just wondering about how much that would cost. I do live in Canada so I dont know if that will change the price at all.HOw much would it cost to fix CV joint and struts?
CV joint would roughly be about 150 to 215, all depends on brand they use, but they just replace the whole thing.

Struts would roughly be about 45 to 60 per corner. Again all depends on quality and type they use.

They will probably do a wheel alignment also an inspection.

So let's say, 50 per corner, and 175 for CV, so 375 for parts, if no other parts are needed.

It would take about 20 min to 40 min per conrder for the struts, and about 45 min to 1.5 hr for the CV Joint, all depends if any complications happen, bolts snaps, blah blah.

I dont know what the average going rate is per shop, but I've seen them range from 65 to 125 per hour.

So let's say they are 85 per hour, so 160 for the struts for the labour, and another hour for the strut, so you are looking at 245 for labour.

    Parts 375 + Labour 245 = 620.00 + applicable taxes and waste charges.

Remember this is just estimates I am pulling out of the air and so I dont know where in Canada, and how much different mechanics costs.HOw much would it cost to fix CV joint and struts?
Here in Detroit that would run you $400.00 to $600.00 depending on whether any additional parts like strut mounts or CV boots need to be replaced as well.HOw much would it cost to fix CV joint and struts?
$550 total, but I'm not sure that includes a wheel realignment if needed which is sixty dollars more. Make sure to have the upper strut isolator bearings replaced at the same time.

  • Help!!! CV joints?

Last Friday I got my oil changed and they told me I need to get my CV joints fixed because the boots are cracked and the grease is coming out.

There is no clicking sound yet, I don't think. Is the clicking sound loud and unmistakable? if so, they are definately not clicking.

If CV joints don't make any noise, does that mean I probably only need the boots replaced and grease packed back in? I'm not sure how long the rubber has been cracked, but do you think the CV joints are still good?

I know I should get this fixed asap, but how long do you think I'm good for, a week?

If I wait longer, stuff is going to get to the joints and mess them up, right?Help!!! CV joints?
depending on how much you drive..you've got time. the cv joints don't just fly apart all of a sudden. They can get pretty bad before failure(not saying that you should test out how long). Unless you plan a cross country tour of the US, you'll be fine for a few weeks, a month...maybe longer. I'd be guessing the oil change place also would be happy to put the cv joints in for you too, eh? I'm not saying that they did this, but I have heard of mechanics 'creating' extra work for themselves by 'inspecting' cv joints...i.e they accidently stick a screw driver through the boot while checking them over to see if they're cracked. If you're not sure, have some other shop quote you a repair to the joints as well...it's a good idea anyway, because it pays to shop around sometimes. And to answer the clicking question-yep, very unmistakable sound. Constant clicking that gets faster and slower as you drive faster and slower. And as they get really bad you'll feel a slight rhythmic jerk in the steering wheel when turning to one side or the other.Help!!! CV joints?
Have some one else check them.

They might be needing income (if you know what I mean).

I have gone the split boot repair route, and I was not happy with how long the repair lasted.

The labor to replace just the boot will exceed the cost of labor to replace the axle and the damage to the mechanical parts may have already been done. Resulting in returning to the mechanic sooner the should have been needed.

So when I get a CV joint done, I just spring for a total replacement.

As for the clicking, you will hear it before they go out.

Start setting aside money right now to have the job done before winter.Help!!! CV joints?
here a good way to check drive backwards and turn as sharp as you can both ways if they bad most of time they will pop more than likey its just the boot.... and sooner is always better but who know how long they been bad you know coulkd have been a long time and no one said any thing you know and yes a week or two is not going to hurt any moreHelp!!! CV joints?
if if if its only the boot then its cheap and easy to do and will last a couple weeks with out noise but if its been ripped for awhile i give it a week but if you have around 40 to 60 bucks you can get 1 with a warranty and thats the whole cv shaft and its very easy to install without going to a shop i can help talk you through it its about the same time wise of work.Help!!! CV joints?
it will be cheaper for you in the long run to put a rebuilt axle in it. most cars it takes a little more than an hour per side. the price of rebuilt axles is right around $70.00. a very reasonable repair that wont come back to haunt youHelp!!! CV joints?
I would replace the entire axles even though they are not yet making noise......they will still have gotten some dirt and debris in them if the boots are already cracked and broken.....even the smallest amount of debris will wear the joints out......get second opinion first though as some shops will use the %26quot;cv boots%26quot; as an excuse to extort money from customers......Help!!! CV joints?
If you are a technician, you can replace all 4 boots for less than fifty dollars. It's like getting a kidney transplant, if you can find a used on on craigs list, you could save tens of thousands of dollars doing it yourself. If the joints are not clicking (popping) as customers state, then yes you can replace the boots. Usually it's just the outers, so at a shop, lets say mine, boot costs me 12.00 costs you 39.95 times two and labor would be between an hour and an hour and a half depending on what kind of vehicle you have, so figure 99-149 in labor per side. As others have stated, you can get complete axle, one per side. At my shop, axles are 39-49 dollars my cost so customer cost is 129.95 and again, an hour labor to an hour and a half depending on labor cost in your area. If you are not clicking the boots will do you fine.Help!!! CV joints?
How big are the %26quot;cracks%26quot;? Obviouisly the bigger the %26quot;holes', the quicker the grease is going to get out, -- and if big enough they will allow dirt and water in (depending on location along boot)also!

Get down under the car and check for yourself, -- if you see lots of grease that has been slinging out in area right above the axle boot (note that there are boots on both ends of each axle). The outer ones will sling grease out quicker (because of extreme flexing when turning)--so a very small hole in inner end will leave grease in for a long time, - but the outer end towards wheel will throw out faster from same size hole, - and allow stuf to get in also -- if it is big enough!

You don't want to wait too long, as when the axle %26quot;joint' parts run dry (all it is ,-is a universal joint tht runs in grease)-- it damages the parts, and there is no %26quot;repair%26quot; at that point!** And of course the %26quot;grit%26quot; from dirt and water %26quot;compound%26quot; really accelerates damage! Some drive axles had both ends removeagble for replacement, and some only have one end removeable!

You did not say what kind of car you have! Some cars have %26quot;quick boots%26quot; which can be installed without pulling the axle out! They are not the best you can do,-- but might save axles till you have time or money to get them taken out and done with%26quot;origional (seamless) boots%26quot;! Since the %26quot;quick boots%26quot; have a %26quot;flange%26quot; that is used to hold them shut after fitted overt the joint, - this is a place for stuff to get jammed in and tear boot up again! In southern states they work fairly well, - as long as you don't go %26quot;mudding%26quot; with the car!.. If you live where there is lots of snow %26amp; ice (and mud in spring),-The deciding factor here is how much clearance between boots and surrounding suspension and frame parts! They get torn off prety easily because of the way the stuff cakes up underneath, and sometimes even builds up around tires so you can't turn steering wheel! If you live there you know what I am talking about !

Is this a good deal for a used car? (1994 Ford Probe GT) It needs new water pump, CV joints, & trans problems.

Hey, I'm having problems with my 1993 Nissan Altima GXE all the time and want a change. So for the past few weeks I've looked on Craigslist.com just to see what was on there. I came across this amazing 1994 Ford Probe GT for $500. I wondered why such a hot car (with two racing stripes) would be so cheap. The man explained that it has 131,000 miles, it needs new water pump, CV joints need to be replacedm it has a dent on driver's door, and the transmissions slips every once in awhile. He says the transmission needs to be %26quot;flushed%26quot; or something. I e-mailed him back saying that I will only buy it if I can take it to a mechanic first to see if the WHOLE transmission needs to be replaced which will definetely not be worth it. Does it sound to any of you that this is a good deal? And how long would a 94' Ford Probe GT last? Kelley Blue Book prices it at $1800 in FAIR condition. I was thinking of buying this and then selling my altima to break even. Any response is much appreciated!!! Thanks! Is this a good deal for a used car? (1994 Ford Probe GT) It needs new water pump, CV joints, %26amp; trans problems.
If you were to Buy the car in present condition it would cost more to fix the car than what it is worth. In reality you are going two pay twice the amount you are paying for the car to get it in working condition. Is it a Good Deal? Yes if you are a Mechanic and just have spare parts lying around! If not I would take a pass.Is this a good deal for a used car? (1994 Ford Probe GT) It needs new water pump, CV joints, %26amp; trans problems.
I wouldn't touch that car with a ten foot pole. phone around to some shops and get estimates for changing both front axles (it actually cheaper to replace the entire axle than to just replace the CV joints, go figure), then phone a transmission shop and ask their price to completely overhaul the transmission. You are thinking about buying this car, so look at worst case scenarios and don't try to sugar coat any of the problems with the shops. I would just about bet, that if you take the $5oo car, your repair bill is going to be around $3000, so now you have twice as much money into it as it is worth. Do what you want, but there are lots of cars out there for the money you want to spend. Is this a good deal for a used car? (1994 Ford Probe GT) It needs new water pump, CV joints, %26amp; trans problems.
Forget it, the transmission needs work and that cost big $. A flush will not fix it. It has a host of other problems....but what about the ones you dont know about that will become apparent after a week of ownership.

You say you need to replace your Maxima because it is having problems...and then you are coming to this message board to ask if buying a Ford laden with problems is a good idea. I can see no logic here.

Look for a car that is in good running condition. That is the only way forward. Is this a good deal for a used car? (1994 Ford Probe GT) It needs new water pump, CV joints, %26amp; trans problems.
That car is NOT worth it, Your looking at close to $700 for pump and CV installed, and THEN a tranny issue. I'm not 100% sure but want't the GT turbo? If it was 131k miles on a turbo, will need to be replaced soon. (turbo or not, I say no way) Your way better off w/ your Altima. Is he paying you $500 to take it. That's the only way I see it could be a good deal. Sounds like a typical Ford to me.Is this a good deal for a used car? (1994 Ford Probe GT) It needs new water pump, CV joints, %26amp; trans problems.
Sounds like a mighty fine deal...if your the guy selling the Probe GT, even if it has two racing stripes. Is this a good deal for a used car? (1994 Ford Probe GT) It needs new water pump, CV joints, %26amp; trans problems.
this is a bad deal because it will cost about 800 dollars to fix the car but it is still a ford and they suck. but it can be a good deal because you could get it running good and sell it for about 2500. i know i just said fords suck but some people love them. And dont worry about the 131k miles on it if it gets fixed there are plently of people who would buy it and do an engine swap or something. just be sure not to be to stupid or you will get screwed over badIs this a good deal for a used car? (1994 Ford Probe GT) It needs new water pump, CV joints, %26amp; trans problems.
The mechanic will probably tell you that you need to replace the transmission but it all depends on how much it slips and at what gear it slips at. The slipping could be that the transmission fluid is low due to a bad seal, which if changed would fix the problem. This car is worth $500 all day long, (even if it didn't have the sweat stripes). The CV joints and water pump will not be $700 if you find the right mechanic. I say go for itIs this a good deal for a used car? (1994 Ford Probe GT) It needs new water pump, CV joints, %26amp; trans problems.
The 94 Probe GT can be a fun car to drive. The 2.5 Litre V6 is the same engine used in similar years Mazda MX-6's. This is a Mazda engine and drivetrain in this car, and the parts are really not that cheap compared to other vehicles.

If the CV joints need replaced, you can get the parts yourself for around 50 bucks each, then you need the boots and the tools and know how in order to change them yourself. A garage would likely charge a couple hundred dollars to change them, as the task is somewhat labor intensive.

The water pump, again, is not quite expensive when you buy it yourself however, having it installed is very expensive due to the amount of labor and time involved.

Automatic transmissions can be a hairy subject. Flushing the tranny and installing new fluid would definitely be a great idea, but if its been slipping, there is more than likely some wear. Replacing the transmission is an expensive chore as it is both labor intensive and the transmission itself is very expensive. Replacing the unit would likely run into the 1200 to 1500 dollar range. I would definitely try the flush and fill first and see if it helps.

You did mention that the car has 131k miles on it, so I would guess that there are also other things that could use replacing. What kind of maintenance has the car seen in the past? The timing belt has a limited lifetime, and if it breaks, your dead in the water. This is a cheap belt, but expensive to have changed at a shop. Oxygen sensors and spark plug wires are expensive for this car, when compared to most.

Although 500 dollars doesnt sound like a lot of money for a car, I would definitely have the car thoroughly inspected by a mechanic before purchasing it. It could easily cost you 5 times as much just to get it reliable again. Look into it, but my personal experience would tell me to keep looking. Is this a good deal for a used car? (1994 Ford Probe GT) It needs new water pump, CV joints, %26amp; trans problems.
I am a dealer. If it will run and honk the horn, it is worth $500. Make sure it will pass inspection in your state. Good luck - Gary

How do i change the differential in my 1990 Corolla?

    1990 Corolla.

Was drained when I filled it up with 80W90 gear oil.

    Auto transmission.

    US calif. Model. 4AFE engine.

I think something gave way inside(probably a tooth on one of the gears). It starts rolling, I hear a loud crack, and the left wheel shakes.

It started doing it when it turned only, now it does it going straight too.

CV joints are new and OK.

    Tie rods Ok(new)

    Steering perfect.

Brakes perfect( new caliper) New pads.

Auto transmission: new filter and fluid. Seems to work smooth( Then again, I have never seen what a broken down auto transmission feels like; anyone knows the symptoms of a faulty transission?)

My diagnosis is that my problem is the differantial, but i do not even know if i can just replace the differential alone(it is front wheel drive) or if it is part of the auto transmission.

ps. I have both Chiltons AND Haynes repair manuals, but neither talk .... about the differential. They go off track talking about the all wheel drive wagon transfer case. How do i change the differential in my 1990 Corolla?
I'm a little skeptical, %26quot;a loud crack%26quot; doesn't quite do it for me. I would inspect the suspension and CV joints again.

However, the car is a front wheel drive so the differential should allow slippage as the wheels turn. Fast repetitive slippage and seizing could possibly cause the wheel to shake. 80W90 does sound a little light, I would have guessed 85 or even 90 weight oil do to the direct connection to the transmission. The differential should be bolted on to the bellhousing, so you should be able to remove it without the transmission but I wouldn't know for sure without looking at it. I suggest removing the differential cover and checking the gear teeth for wear or any metal loose pieces of metal (there should be a magnet at the bottom that collects these). A bad transmission wouldn't cause the symptoms your describing. Normally when an automatic transmission fails it tends to burn fluid, slip, shift really rough, sick in one gear, not go forward or not go into reverse, hell I've even seen cause the engine to die out. You might be able to find one in the junkyard.

Anyway, good luck with that, I hope you figure it out and get it resolved. I'm curious to know what it is.

How to take out an axle on a dogde intrepid?

I have a 1997 dodge intepid that i want to change the passenger side cv joint. I can not get it out. I have pulled on it quite hard but no luck. What should I do.How to take out an axle on a dogde intrepid?
once you get it clear all you have to do is give it one real hard jerk and it will come out, dave told you right on this one,its real easy to get those out, good luck. How to take out an axle on a dogde intrepid?
I assume you are trying to release it from the trans. You cant do that by pulling on it. You need to get behind the inner joint with a descent sized pry-bar between the joint and the trans itself. Don't try slow steady pressure. It takes a hard sudden SNAP with the pry-bar to pop it loose. There is a circlip at the end of the inner joint shaft holding it into the trans.

    Best of Luck!

I am writing this because I have an issue with my car, and so far everyone I ask gives a different answer?

    It's really 3 issues.

    1. The car makes a grinding noise, like a pencil in a pencil sharpener or a card in spokes when I go above 40mph. The only thing is it's not consistant. If you think of the accelerater peddle like a scale of 0%-100%, then after 40mph it makes the noise between 0%-10% then runs smoth from 10%-20%, then grinds at 20%-30%, then after that it makes no noise no matter how far I push the accelerater down. It only does it above 40mph, and almost litterally the grinding shuts off when it drops below 40mph. The sound appears to be comming from the engine and I can feel a vibration the foot pedal.

    2. The car makes a rattling noise occassionally, when initially accelerating, like metal smacking but in a rattling manor. If I allow the car to idle in park and rev the engine to approx. 3000/rpms then in makes the noise continuesly (but only in park or nutral) Also on occasions I hear the noise when turning the wheel at slow speeds. I've looked under the hood, and it seems like the noise is either comming from behind the engine, or under it. I do not hear the noise when

I am driving unless, it is related to issue one, but they seem like seperate noises.

    3. The last thing, I believe I may know, but just to be sure. The vehicle seems like it is struggling to stay alive when idle or stopped at at light/sign. It's worse in park or nutral, but not as bad in drive. It also tends to shake (the whole car) when I am stopped, unless I put it in park or nutral at a light/sign. (This I have no clue)- Beyond that the accelerator seems to stick when initially engaging then surges forward like it recieved alot of power, and this happens not matter if I ease my foot onto the pedal or not. Also when I make a stop it does fine all the way till I am almost compltly stopped, then it almost seems like the tires lock, but it jerks foward everytime (only at complete stops, not slowing down).

    Some vehicle info-

    1991 Ford Excort 1.9L wagon.

65k Odometer (but turns over at 100k so could be 165k)

So far we've changed the oil, flushed the radiator, changed the air filter, and changed the fuel pump. We tried changing the CV joints, only to pull them off and find them in new condition. Also, not pertinent, we have rotated the tires.

Not sure what it is, I have heard a ton of suggestions, none being consistent. I also took it to AutoZone for a free diagnostic, and he said it read fine. I am not eager to jump to a mechanic, just to pay a ton only to figure out the problem. I don't mind going to one, but would like to know the problem first, so I know what to expect. Also, if it's a few small things it would be great to just take care of them myself. ThanksI am writing this because I have an issue with my car, and so far everyone I ask gives a different answer?
You said if you %26quot;allow the car to idle in park and rev the engine to approximately 3000 rpms then it makes the noise continuously.%26quot; That is a very revealing clue which isolates the grinding noise to a part which is moving while the car is stationary and not in motion. The first things I would suspect are the a/c clutch bearing, the alternator bearing, or the transaxle/transmission main shaft (aka input shaft) bearing. But since you also said that you %26quot;can feel a vibration [in] the foot pedal%26quot; and that %26quot;the noise is either coming from behind the engine or under it,%26quot; I wouldn't bet a ham sandwich that the grinding/rattling noise is coming from the a/c clutch bearing or the alternator bearing. That makes the transaxle/transmission main shaft bearing my 1 suspect. But regardless of where the grinding noise is coming from, if the noise is continuous at 3000 rpm while in Park as you say, then it would be a simple matter to trace and identify using a mechanics stethoscope or a listening rod.I am writing this because I have an issue with my car, and so far everyone I ask gives a different answer?
extremely good description of the problem. i tend to think u have a clogged exaust system/ catalitic converter.I am writing this because I have an issue with my car, and so far everyone I ask gives a different answer?
Alot of mechanics will give you a free estimate and check out your car for free. make some calls and find out who can do this for you.I am writing this because I have an issue with my car, and so far everyone I ask gives a different answer?
Problem 1 is definitely a wheel bearing.

Problem 2 sounds like an exhaust rattle, could even be the converter broke apart and pieces are in there, or even some of that heat insulator they put on at the factory is coming loose.

Problem 3 could be a few things, a tune up may fix it, maybe try some fuel injector cleaner too, thats where I would start.I am writing this because I have an issue with my car, and so far everyone I ask gives a different answer?
I would think that the wheeI bearings would have been checked when the cv joints were replaced.

I think you need to inspect the motor/transmission mounts. If they are worn the engine/transaxle assembly will shift and make for weird noises and amplify small vibrations into loud ugly ones. It also allows the assembly to shift under cornering.

The surging problem sounds like a vacuum leak.I am writing this because I have an issue with my car, and so far everyone I ask gives a different answer?

There is a nut that attaches the CV joint to the transaxle. You need an inner CV joint removal tool to take it off. You can rent them at Autozone, Advance Auto Parts, etc.How do I take the cv joint off the axel to change the axel boot in a 93 mercury villager?
Have you looked at the replacement boot? You should not have to take the CV joint off of the axle. The old boot however normally must be cut off. The new one will have an open side on it to wrap it around the axle, and a way to seal it after it's around the axle. There is no need to remove the axle from the vehicle.

As for removal, there are 2 common types of cv joints.

1 requires heating the outer portion of the joint till the bearings come out. Doing this wrong can ruin the half shaft. I don't suggest trying.

The other has retaining clips which may be hidden by old grease. Clean the shaft well, then examine it. You should replace the grease anyway. How do I take the cv joint off the axel to change the axel boot in a 93 mercury villager?
It has to be pressed off and the new one pressed back on, that is the only way. Any other way will destroy the parts. How do I take the cv joint off the axel to change the axel boot in a 93 mercury villager?
IT WILL EITHER HAVE A SMALL CLIP OR NOTHING HOLDING IT ON.

YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO JUST ALIGN THE JOINT WITH THE AXLE AND TAP IT OFF WITH A BRASS HAMMER, ITS THAT SIMPLE.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE IT PRESSED ON AND OFF.

BUT I DO AGREE WITH GETTING A COMPLETE AXLE ASSEMBLY, BALANCED SHAFT, 2 JOINTS, 2 BOOTS, 4 CLAMPS AND A NEW NUT....$69.95 TO 99.95

once you get the spindle nut off, you have to disconect the the tie rod from the hub, then hammer the axel through the hub, then get a crow bar and place it between the axel and tranny and work it! it helps to have the tranny in N so be careful and gl.

If you have a good manual, and reasonable mechanical ability, maybe 2 hours. Pull the tire, pull the brake caliper, pull the rotor, pull out the shaft. Just make sure that when u put in the new shaft it's fully seated, some light taps may be needed. If so, make sure you put a piece of wood on the end of it before you start tapping on it as you will damage the splines..

It's easy with a lift, air tools, and a ball joint separator. Without the lift it is inconvenient. Without the air tools (specifically an impact wrench) and ball joint separator tool (not a pickle fork!) it is a real beast. The axle nut is torqued to 180 ft-lbs and will have embedded itself to a much higher breakaway torque. A 3 foot breaker bar will still lift the corner of the car off the jack stand before the nut will let go. ok being a machanic for 20 years i can tell you this. Remove tire then loosen then axle nut in the center of the hub ( this requires a special socket ) and it is a bugger to remove. After the nut is loose but completely off ( run the nut to the end of the threads ) take a sledge hammer and a piece of wood, place the wood over the nut and smack it hard with the sledge ( this releases the axle from the hub ) t5hen remove the nut completly. Loosen the lower control arm, sway bar and any other components attached to the lower control arm, swing it out of the way while pulling the axle out of the hub assembly. place a pan under the axle and transmission. once you have placed a pan under the transmission, Take a pry bar and place it between the axle and transmission and pry it off. This takes a little fieness but it will pop off and there with be some fluid loss. Reverse the procedure when installing the new axle and besure to torque all bolts and the axle nut to specs I hope I was of help........How to change pass.side cv joint 96 honda civic ex 2dr?

Typically a pry bar or tire iron can be used to pry the CV shaft loose from the transfer case. As mentioned, previously, there is a lock ring to prevent it from coming out easily, but a swift jerk with a pry bar will allow you to get the shaft out.

Here are instructions for an older ZX2, but typically the process is similar.

Good luck.Do I need a cv joint to change a wheel stud?
You do not need to replace the cv joint to change a wheel stud.

Take a the tire off spin hub until it is on the opposite side of the brake caliper be care full not to hit the brake rotor use a punch and hammer or a mallet drive the broken wheel stud in towards the car. It should come out after about 3-4 good hits. Install the new wheel stud from the inside out tap in with a hammer make sure it seats all the way in.

Go to www.autozone.com they have repair manuals that tell and show you step by step how to fix your car. It is very handy.Do I need a cv joint to change a wheel stud?
Slow down a bit and pay a bit more attention to what is being done in the video.

All he is doing is using a CV Joint %26quot;nut%26quot; to serve as a spacer while tightening the wheel nut, it pulls the stud into place. It saves in this case removing the whole hub assembly and pressing it in from behind once the splash guard is out of place.

I've come to terms that I need a head gasket... So how much is the damage??? :(?

I poste about 2 hours ago about my 92' Jeep Cherokee Laredo and how it has oil in the coolant. After the 6 great answers I got, I've come to terms that it's probably a head gasket. Along with the head gasket, I'll need to flush out the oil out of the coolant too. I'm trying to find out how much is too much as opposed to how much cause I know its probably different everywhere. I would just sell it as is and get a dependable sedan, but it just can't happen. I need a few other things done (oil change, cv joints, etc.) but I want to get the important **** done. It's a straight 6 engine, so i believe it's only got 1 gasket.I%26039;ve come to terms that I need a head gasket... So how much is the damage??? :(?
There is a reason the gasket failed, and it should be fixed also. Plan on getting the head milled to correct the warp. Might as well just give it a valve job.

You might just want to get a complete engine from a salvage yard. Get them to check the compression first. This would prove faster and maybe give you fewer surprises. You might find lower prices then those at this site:

    http://www.car-part.com/

But it will give you an idea of the cost.I%26039;ve come to terms that I need a head gasket... So how much is the damage??? :(?
u r looking at about1,200 to 1,500 dollarsI%26039;ve come to terms that I need a head gasket... So how much is the damage??? :(?
The straight (inline) six cylinder from that model is pretty straightforward. Not a great deal of stuff to remove to get to that cylinder head. If you have not suffered engine damage due to the coolant in the oil, I'd think $300 might cover that job.I%26039;ve come to terms that I need a head gasket... So how much is the damage??? :(?
If you are fixing only the head gasket...and provided the head is in good shape...you are probably looking at between $300 and $600 depending on the garage you take it to. they all charge different labor rates so that will be the factor you are looking at.I%26039;ve come to terms that I need a head gasket... So how much is the damage??? :(?
you might have someone qualified to check if the head or block/cylinders/etc. are not cracked first-you might be wasting money altogether for a non -repairable motor

How much does it cost to change wheel bearings / Cv Joint ?

I bought a honda civic coupe recently .

yesterday i was driving my mom back from work , and as i was parking , i turned my wheels and i could hear a screeching or shreiking sound coming from the Right Front Wheels .

i did some research on Yahoo answers and it seems that

this could have been a defective wheel bearing or a cv joint .

i called the service center and the manager told me it could be the mud thing making that sound , and he adviced me to check tire pressure . So i did and seemed the air pressure was low on the Right front wheel and put some air in . But the sound didn't %26quot;go away%26quot; . it sounds like 2 thin metal pieces sliding each other ( it's a high pitched shreiking/ screeching sound) i dn't understand what's going on . I dn't have a job right now , looking for a job , should i take it to the honda service center where i bought it ( will it be covered ) , or any service center ...

I was wondering if that exactly is the problem , and how much will it cost me to fix itHow much does it cost to change wheel bearings / Cv Joint ?
I don't think is the cv joints or the bearings, since the bearings will sound (while you're driving) like you are driving a pick-up truck with huge wheels on it, (you know the sound they make)

And if it's the cv joints it will only and ONLY when you turn to either side (clack, clack, clack noise), if it's screeching noise it's the brake pads, check to see if the disks are smooth, that could be the problem, if they 're not change the pads, that should fix the problem!, BUT if they tell you to change the cv joints it's about $70 labor, plus the parts, each side, if you don;t have the money just tell them that you want the affected side (even though the Honda service they'll try to tell you you need to do both) DO ONLY THE ONE, then when you have the money do the other one, i don't think is the bearings...

But whatever you do don't take to the dealer it's gonna cost you a lot!!!, if it's not under warranty off-course.

What you can do to make sure it's not the cv-joints is this:

Turn the wheels to one side and look inside (the other side where you put the nuts that hold the tire) and you'll see a large piece of rubber like a cup, that's called the %26quot;boot%26quot; they'll have a metal ring that holds it in place, if that's loose or you see grease all over it, that's the problem, but like i said before i think is your brake pads. GOOD LUCK!!!How much does it cost to change wheel bearings / Cv Joint ?
Replace wheel bearings...cheap - CV Joints...very expensive, Tonto! How much does it cost to change wheel bearings / Cv Joint ?
If it's under warranty, you ought to be covered. It sounds more like a wheel bearing than the CV joint.

Check the rubber boot between the wheel and the transaxle. Look around the boot as well. These things can get a hole and throw grease out. Look for a pattern of grease around the boot. If there is a hole, yes it's the CV joint and it' gonna be expensive. I've never done a Honda CV, but you're looking at $350 +

How hard is it to change the right CV joint on a 2003 GMC Yukon?

It clicks and hammers when turned to the left while the wheel is turning, the harder the turn, the louder the rotational frequency noise. How hard is it to change the right CV joint on a 2003 GMC Yukon?
If you are talking about doing it yourself, a CV joint is pretty involved. I've never done it, but I am pretty sure you have to disassemble all the suspension on that side, and the wheel bearings, hubs, etc.

Really a professional job I think, unless you are pretty confident in your skills. Check out a Haynes or other repair manual and you can flip through it and see what's up.

Ford Probe *cringe*.... Unless it is like brand new with 25,000 miles on it or less just get a new car.....How long should it take for a shop to change the clutch on my 91 Ford Probe GL?
Really you know what, you are going to get ripped off if you go to a shop anyway so I don't know if you are going to want to take it to get fixed. I mean if you have someone that you know and is good with cars all you have to do is followed, Well really it's all about how long it will take you. I know that we had to do that in ours and most of the work is lifting the engine up. If you lift the engine out it should take a few hours depending if you know what you are doing. For a shop to do that it will be like more money than the car is worth. I know how much fun these are to drive. So basically don't take it to a mechanic. I know because I am one and I was sick of getting kicked in the A** When I took my cars to the shop, so have good luckHow long should it take for a shop to change the clutch on my 91 Ford Probe GL?
Depends on how busy the shop is, but typically a day or two.How long should it take for a shop to change the clutch on my 91 Ford Probe GL?
I had a 74 ford with bad motor mounts and i only got charged $450. for a new clutch and motor mounts, so i'm not sure how much your cv joints are going to cost. if your smart you'll find a well certified auto shop and just get a quote. i'd estimate right around $500-$1000. but i'm not a pro on some of the 90's cars. but trust me when they pull the motor they pull it right up to the radiator and this can take a while. it took my friends shop 2 hours. How long should it take for a shop to change the clutch on my 91 Ford Probe GL?
When it comes to hours and prices, a reputable shop will charge by what is known as %26quot;flat rate%26quot; hour. This is determined by a book that is available to repair shops and gives an estimate of how long it should take to replace parts. This will not be available to you or any other customer to look at, so don't bother asking. The bottom line is that you need to shop around and get an estimate. You should dismiss both the lowest and highest priced places. The highest will most likely be the dealership and the lowest will probably be a shop that has never done one before and has no clue as to the trouble a Probe is. So that leaves the others. That will give you an estimate of what it will cost. Do you have a sentimental attatchment to the car? If so, then you will probably want to get the car fixed. If not, then seriously consider shopping around for another car and see what kind of trade in you can get for yours. The trade in value won't be much, but will be better than putting money into what you have and not getting that much more for it on trade. The time it takes for the actual job and the time it takes for the shop to get your car finished is actually 2 different things. If the shop had ALL the possible parts that is needed to complete the job waiting there when you get your car there then the time would be a lot quicker than the actual time that it takes. The actual time involves tearing down your car, seeing what is needed (parts), then ordering the parts and waiting on the parts people to deliver them. That can in some cases almost double the time that it would take for the actual repair. Most shops are not out to rip anyone off. The prices that are charged are to cover overhead, and to try to make a fair and honest living for their families. Then there is the government regulations from the DNR and EPA just to name a couple. So once again, bottom line, shop around and get prices then compare that cost to the cost of replacing the car. Then let your pocketbook be your guide.

You have to replace the whole CV shaft, and if you do one then you might as well do the other. Once you get it out of the hub on the wheel side you pretty much just pop it out of the trans with a crowbar. It's not terribly difficult, It's one of the first jobs I did when I started driving.

P.S. You might need a puller to get the cv shaft out of the hub.How do i change inner cv joint on ford escort?
Changing CV joints requires special tools and lots of patience. It's not a difficult job but not an easy one without the proper tools and knowledge. It is an expensive job at the garage but atleast it will be done right. Guides can be found on many automotive websites (I don't feel like looking up any for an Escort).

It is fairly complicated. Depending on what you mean by broke. But if it started clicking when you turned the wheel to one side or the other, then it probably just wore out. It can be removed and replaced fairly easy. But it takes %26quot;some%26quot; mechanical knowledge to do it. If not look around. Find a good backyard mechanic who can do it for you. If you have a warranty, then for sure take it to the dealer. But you know what those warrants are like. You end up paying more money than you planned. Don't go to the dealer, they will charge you way too much. Go to a good neighborhood shop, same quality work half the price.

You will need the whole axle. Just the cv joint can't be replaced if it's already broken. And it's complicated to do if your a beginner.

Only if they leak or are making noise...

I've seen cars with 225000 miles with orgional cv bootsHow often do i have to change the cv boots or joints?
cv boots need only be changed when damaged, cut.

some joints can be lubed others only need to be changed when they start to bind or make noise, usually caused after

the boot is cut and allows the grease to leak out. on front wheel drive vehicles has cv joints as rear wheel drive vehicles

have u joints in the drive shaft. How often do i have to change the cv boots or joints?
CV boots are lasting much longer on newer cars. Older cars boots would split open more easily and lose their joint grease as well as become contaminated with road dirt. So as long as the boot remains intact, you can expect CV joints to last maybe even the life of the car. Usually there's plenty of warning when they start to wear out, with clicking noises on turns etc. They're also used in 4 wheel drive applications in other drive shafts. How often do i have to change the cv boots or joints?

That is complicated to answer on here the best advice I can give you is take it to a mechanic or if you want to do it yourself get a repair manual and it will give you step by step directions with diagramsHow to change cv joint on mazda 121?
A manual can tell you how to do it, step by step, just be aware that under the car the bolts and nuts are exposed to water, mud and salt for years, and may be too rusted to break loose without some trouble, or, in extreme cases, cutting a bolt or splitting a nut.

    At many auto parts stores you can buy a Haynes do-it-yourself manual for your model car, with step-by-step instructions, and basic explanations at the beginning of each chapter. If it is not in stock, you can order it online by searching on %26quot;auto repair manuals%26quot; on Yahoo search. In the front is a section on %26quot;Troubleshooting%26quot; that guides you step-by-step to find causes of most engine malfunctions based on the car's symptoms. Whether you do the work yourself or not, it helps you make informed decisions and not be taken advantage of, and to not feel so %26quot;in the dark.%26quot;

db667089 says: you can check http://www.alldatadiy.com. For about the same price as a Haynes or Chilton's repair manual, you can have online access (for a whole year) to model specific info for your particular vehicle. This is the same info that repair shops use. They have great wiring schematics/diagrams.

Also, for about $15 for a one-month subscription, you can get the factory manual, downloadable (careful! Mine was about 500 pages!) or viewable, at http://eAutoRepair.com.

Also, many people recommend autozone.com's free online manuals.

VW passat 1999 how hard would it e to change my cv joints on this car as well as the brakes.?

i dont have mush mechanical experience, but very novice. should i do it? how much would a shop charge? for driver and passenger outer cv joints?VW passat 1999 how hard would it e to change my cv joints on this car as well as the brakes.?
I guess it depends on a couple of things. Do you really %26quot;want%26quot; to do the work yourself? Do you have the time, energy, and workspace? Do you have a good, sturdy jack, and jack stands?

CV joint and Brake repair is straightforward, however, if you've never completed a task like this, it will take you some time to figure things out. There are torque specifications involved. You may need to purchase a tool or two. Specifically, a special bit to loosen the CV joint bolts. If you really, really, really want to do it yourself, take the time to crawl under the car and look around at A) what you want to replace and B) what needs to be taken off to get to what you want to replace.

Working on your own car can be rewarding, however, if you don't have the time or energy to complete the task, perhaps it's best to pay a trusted mechanic. Not Midas or Meineke or even the dealer. Those places will screw almost every time.VW passat 1999 how hard would it e to change my cv joints on this car as well as the brakes.?

no, its not something you can easily do at home, brakes are easy and you can do them, cv joints require much more work. and the previous poster was correct, its actually cheaper to get the axle shafts with the cv joints then it is for just the cv joints (and it will save you time).

on a passat, the cv joint replacement will cost you well over $1000. I believe the parts are $400 a peice, plus labor. consumerguideauto.com says $1375@$50 an hour labor.

If it was me, and i had the room, id do it at home... its hard to tell you whether you should do it yourself or take it in. if you want to learn, and dont mind not having a car for a few days, then do it at home... youre not going to be able to do it as fast as a mechanic, but if you do them yourself, you know they are done right... its a fine line for anyone.. do i learn to do them myself, saving me thousands of dollars later in my life... or take them in and hope the mechanic is competent enough to handle this job?

if you decide just to replace the joints, go to autozone and they will rent you the cv joint tools.. obviously youre going to need jack stands and a floor jack if you dont have them.VW passat 1999 how hard would it e to change my cv joints on this car as well as the brakes.?
Poor choice for DIY, need 3/4 inch tools and very long breaker bar(4-6 foot long!) and a good feel for torque above 250 Ft lbs. Also have to disconnect and reconnect ball joints(critical suspension parts)

Why do you need to change CV's/Axles??????????????

Brakes- you can damage ABS components costing 1,000's of dollars by doing your brakes wrong so you may want to pass on that. ABS requires special procedures these days when it comes to compressing the calipers and a working knowledge of your rotors is pretty much necessary or you may achieve an unsatisfacory result(pulsating pedal etc.)

Its not as hard as some might think. You will need a 34mm.or a 36mm socket to remove the axle nut. This is not an easy job. It will require breaking loose the axle nut which will be very tight and probably frozen. A shop might break it loose for you but if not you will want something like a 1” drive air hammer. The old 4’ breaker bar would do it too but be sure to break it loose before jacking up the car because even a properly supported vehicle can fall off the jack stands with that kind of torque. If you haven’t done work like this I would take it to a shop. If you want to think about it, look at the procedure in a manual, and then decide. I am about to perform this job on my Honda.

I usually change the entire half shaft. Rebuilt Hyundai Axle Assembly

In many cases it is better to replace the entire Hyundai axle shaft assembly, instead of just replacing a bad cv joint. Axle assemblies are used primarily in front wheel drive cars, but they are also used on 4 wheel drive cars and trucks, and are used on most high end German rear wheel drive cars. The Hyundai axle is used to seamlessly transmit the torque form the transmission to the wheels. The axle shafts typically have a cv joint at both ends of the axle, but there are cases where the axle will have a cv joint at one end and a u-joint at the other end. Dont pay huge service fees to have your Hyundai cv joints replaced, when you can save hundreds of dollars replacing the entire Hyundai axle shaft, and in most cases you can even change the axle your self with some basic tools. Our axle shafts have brand new cv joints and come with a great warranty. At Drivewire you get the highest quality Hyundai Axle Assembly at discount pricing with free ground shipping. Drivewire carries all the major manufacturers of Hyundai axle assembly including; Genuine, empi, and acei axles and can save you up to 80% the cost of having the joints serviced. Is it hard to change cv joints on a hyundai sonata v6 1996?

Does anyone have instuctions on how to change cv joints on 1988 honda 300 trx fourtrax?

Remove the wire bands and yank the CV joints off of the axle (a heavy slide hammer is helpful).

The joints are held onto the axle with circlips (they look like the circlips holding the piston on the upper connecting rod).

When the joints are pulled, the circlips contract allowing the joints to slide off the axle.

A special tool is required to install the new wire bands.

How do you change cv joints on a 1996 Ford Aspire?

I need to know how to change them out, I know some cars have fluid ATF? that spills out when you pull the cv joint out. Does the Aspire have it? It is a manual, with no ABS. ThanksHow do you change cv joints on a 1996 Ford Aspire?
i know a lot about fords but i dont know the answer to this question. i would say to go on autozone dot com and search their repair manual for this car. if it doesnt say on the site then a 20 dollar haynes manual will tell you every step. hope this helps.
